As caretakers of the breed, we strive to maintain the original purpose for which these dogs were bred. They were bred to retrieve and to be athletic. To breed for only one trait, such as "shed free" or "hypoallergenic" is to do a disservice to any breed, and neglects other very important traits such as proper structure and genetic soundness. Most doodle breeders have little or no understanding of the genetics behind their dogs. Poodles bred to other breeds produce shedding puppies 50-75% of the time. Many Doodles are bred from breeds which suffer high rates of cancer resulting in early painful deaths. Temperament issues are quite common with Doodle breeds with many breeders turning out puppies as quickly as possible with very little socialization for the puppies or the parents. It you want a dog that is kid friendly, 100% shed free and has good genetics behind it, go Allstar Poodles all the way!
Hybrid Vigor is a diversionary tactic used to sell mix breed puppies to unsuspecting people. Many people will swear that purebreds have more problems than mix breeds. What is not mentioned is that a reputable breeder is doing genetic testing to find those problems. Of course it will look like purebreds have more issues. There is a whole list of diseases specific to every purebred out there with more being added daily. It is because dedicated breeders are not hiding their heads in the sand, but standing up and identifying problems within their own breed and working on ways to fix them. What is a mix breed, but a dog of unknown heritage. It is a shot in the dark of what diseases lurk behind the lineage of the dog. Basically it is the possibility of all the known diseases from every breed that is mixed in with that dogs lineage. If anything, there is a greater chance of having a dog with genetic or temperamental issues. Go to the pounds and see the results of indiscriminate breeding. Rescuing is fine and noble, but the belief that a mix breed will always live longer than a healthy pure bred from a reputable breeder is a fallacy.
